I was at Wal-Mart the other day and as I entered the checkout line my eyes ran across a few magazines. Plastered across most of the women’s magazines were barely dressed women. I asked myself, why on a woman’s magazine, is there a half-dressed lady? I don’t want to see that!
I also thought, I sure as heck do not want my husband to see that!! It just so happened this past Sunday at church my pastor challenged us women in the congregation. He asked us ladies to “love our brothers enough to dress appropriately when in front of them”. I don’t believe that was a standard just from my pastor, but that God has called us to this standard.
Paul also encourages us ladies to set a specific standard for the way we dress in 1 Timothy 2:9. He said, ” to adorn ourselves in modest apparel.” I don’t think Paul meant this as a suggestion, nor do I think he wrote this with just fall and spring in mind. We also must apply this standard to our summer clothes, our workout clothes, and our swimwear.
That verse carries meaning in every outfit we place on this body. By doing so we not only honor God, but we are honoring our fellow brothers as well. The way we cloth our selves is saying that we Delight in God gaining attention, not our bodies, or our outfits. Also ladies modesty does not mean you have to be anti-fashion!
What is Modesty?
So what is modesty, and why should we care about it? Who does it apply to and how do we obtain modesty?
- Act of worship: As believers the way we live our lives, and everything we do within it can be seen as a way of worshiping God. That comes to the way we dress as well. One question we can ask ourselves is, am I wearing this for the worship of self, for man? Or is my desire only to worship God. When you decide to honor God with the way you present yourself, to the world then you are worshiping him.
- Sets us apart from the world: Did you know your attire can hinder the gospel. It can steal the truth of what God has done for you. When someone sees you in revealing or seductive clothing, would their first taught be “she’s definitely a child of God?” Probably quite the opposite.
- We reveal our Dignity: When we dress immodest we set up our bothers to sin before God. (Matthew 5:27–29) ” says that if a man even has a lustful thought of a woman then he has committed adultery. Ladies this is serious, if we were to cause our brothers to stumble it’s on us as well (1 Corinthians 8:13). We must love our brothers enough to care about their well-being before our God. In the end it is on them where they choose to invest their thoughts, but by focusing on modesty we can do much to help them!
- It is about God and his Glory: If we are dressed inappropriately then we draw attention to our bodies and it dilutes and removes the focus from the glory of what God has done for our souls. We never want be caught hindering the gospel, yet in all that we do we want to bring Him glory. (1 Corinthians 10:31)
What does Modesty Look Like today?
Does modesty mean we have to cover from head to toe, never showing our ankles? First we must recognize that Modesty is an attitude of the heart. It is the way of which we hold ourselves, and the way we reveal our dignity. If you truly desire to worship God, and also desire godliness, then you would not allow clothing to hinder the gospel and what he has done for you. You will be mindful of the fact that because of the cross your precious body was bought at a price (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
Once you consider those things God will give you wisdom as to what clothing is too revealing. Also He will bring to light reasons within your heart as to why you wear some of the items you do, if they are for focus on anything other than Him.
