BUDGETING APP WE US: EVERYDOLLAR (linked)
Have you ever wondered what God thinks about debt? Have you ever wondered about what God thinks about the way we steward “HIS MONEY”? What does he think about our lack of contentment? Well Thankfully His word tell us what He thinks about all of it.
I grew up in a house where the word budget was never said in front of me. In my house credit cards were a big thing, and if we didn’t have the money then we charged it. I never was taught how to save or how to create a budget. I was never taught that debt was bad a bad thing. What’s worse, I never knew that God cared about how I spent and managed money.
When I married Josh I had over $30,000 in school debt, and I had 2,000 dollars in credit card debt. So when we said I do, my debt became his debt. That was the first time I was ever embarrassed of my debt. Josh had none and I brought over 30,000 dollars of debt into our marriage. It was awful, it still is awful! We are heading toward our 4th wedding anniversary, and we are still making payments on that debt.
A Slave to Debt
Since our wondrous “I do”, God has used Joshua to open my eyes to the fact that debt is not a thing of the Lord. As a matter of fact God’s word warns us against it! Proverbs 22:7, says
“The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.”
Jesus’ death on the cross was in part to set us free from enslavement. Yet this verse makes it very clear that when we are in debt we are enslaved to the creditor. Thus hindering us from serving God and others well, due to our lack of financial freedom.
Godliness is Contentment
As believers our aim is to seek after Christ. To allow Him to transform our lives so that through it others might come to know Him. Our aim is to live out that transformation in a godly way! 2 Peter 1:3, says that we can do this through His power! Unfortunately many times my desire for things of this world has overshadowed my ambition for Him and for Godliness. My lack of contentment in the Lord at times has led me to a life of comparison and jealousy. Each time I have desired to have the material items other people have, once obtained, I am still left empty and wanting next new thing!
1 Timothy 6:6 says,
“Godliness with contentment is great gain.”
Only when I am truly satisfied in the Lord have I reached a point of Godliness. And only then will I be able to understand the satisfaction of contentment in my creator. When I find contentment in Him, then the material things of this world will fade away, I will neither find fulfillment or satisfaction in them.
Where the Heart is
As awful as it is to admit it, I literally want something all the time. If I am on social media, and I see something in relation to fashion or kid fashion I want it for Emma or myself. If it is in a southern living magazine, there is always something I find in there that I want and “need” for the house or outside. If I am grocery shopping at Walmart and I see the clothing or the makeup all of a sudden there is something I need! I mean I could seriously go on and on. Do you know that there were times I wanted to steal sneak money from the cash back at the grocery story. That way Josh wouldn’t be able to see where I spent it!! Yuck!
Luke 12:34 says,
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Do not misunderstand this verse! This verse is saying if I was to look at my bank account on what I spent or if I was able to tally all the times I compared my life to what I didn’t have ( based on all the things I see in social media), I could see where my heart was. Is my money and hearts desires aimed towards earthly pleasures and debt or is it aimed towards fulfilling God’s purpose? UGH… it’s ugly when God puts the mirror in front of my face!
Once I started dating Josh I knew I wanted to be better with money. However, it wasn’t until I took a Dave Ramsey class, and he shared God’s truth about money with me, and I knew things needed to change! Seeing what God thought about my spending habit, and how I was stewarding His money is what pushed my heart to truly change. Contentment and budgeting has been one of the hardest things for me to get a hold on. It has only been through Christ and the leadership of Joshua that I have come as far as I have! Be encouraged that God is waiting to help you have a hold on your finances.
