Have you ever felt like you were far from God? Or like you’re talking to Him, but is he really listening? Can he really hear me at all? Truth be told, I think most believers have felt like this! If not multiple times in their walk, than at least one time or another. I think it is safe to say we all have experienced a “dry” season in our walk with God, and it is not as if God left us but what we have done to feel separated from God.
So how do we get out of that dry season? How can we get ourselves back to a place to where we feel connected with God? Or better Yet, how can we strengthen our relationship with Christ?
A relationship with God is pretty much just like any other relationship. Communication is key, we have to stop talking long enough to hear the other person talk, and we have to be present. God desires a deep relationship with you. So much so that in His word he calls you friend.
No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:15
How amazing is that? The God of this universe calls you friend, and He wants to have a daily relationship with you. That makes me feel all giddy inside, like I have butterflies in my stomach, it overwhelms me! Below I list 10 ways to grow in that friendship with Christ?
10 Ways to Strengthen Your Relationship With God
Prayer– I think this is the most obvious one, but really prayer is our way of communication with God. Do you have a single relationship that is not built on communication? There is no specific way it has to look. Just talk to God, about everything!
Bible Reading– We MUST get in the word daily. For a few reasons, first scripture provides us with the image of God. It allows us to see His character. Second, scripture provides us with the format to how we as followers of Christ should live our lives. Once we gain understanding of who God is and His character, only then can we start to mimic His character.
Meditation– Taking the time to sit and think over what you just read. Not just opening the bible, reading a chapter, closing it and placing it back on the nightstand. No, meditating is taking what you just read either the chapter or a few verses and thinking about them and what stuck out to you. Asking yourself how it applies to your life, do your actions and life style reflect what you’ve just read, or allowing your self to sit in wonder of what you just read.
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. (Joshua 1:8)
Worship– This does not just mean Sunday morning music. Now worship is anything you do while offering it up to God as praise. Worship can be you using your God given gifts for his glory, it can be praising His name in your car, it can be meeting together with a group of Girls and sharing what God is doing in your life, it can be mopping the floor and doing it gladly to the best of your ability all for the glory of God!
Music– I personally love listening to music and praising Gods name while around the house! It one, keeps my eyes fixated on Jesus while I’m doing things around the house. Secondly, the words in the music paint the beauty of our creator and allow me to worship Him in whatever I’m doing at that time. Usually when I hear a song that is painting the image of God with its lyrics, it pushes my heart to a place of thanksgiving and complete joy!
Community– I cannot stress biblical community enough. Walking alongside other brothers and sisters is what we were created to do! God designed us for community not only with others but also with Him. When we place ourselves in the right community, they not only share life and love with you, but they are also there to help guide you back when we tend to stray off the path.
As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another. (Proverbs 27:17)
Church attendance– I am a firm believer in the importance of church membership. So much so that I wrote a whole post on it, you can read it here. When you meet with other believers and you’re all gathered together to praise God’s name, things happen. That is what heaven is going to be like friends! Also, we must remember that the bible describes the church like a body. We ALL have a part to play in the church, God strategically designed each and every one of us to be a part of that body.
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. (1 Cor. 12:12)
Accountability- Allow yourself to be vulnerable around others. Only when you are 100% honest with yourself, God, and others can you truly see the works of God in your life. Also when we are honest with ourselves and others, we realize how in need we are of God. Along with that God reveals how we need others to sharpen us and to hold us accountable for certain things. Allowing someone who is in Christ to know what you are going through allows them to help push you towards Christ when ever you have fallen or if you just need encouragement.
Books/commentaries- With so many resources at our finger tips, we have no excuse to not get our questions answered. Remember one must be smart about the information you are receiving. Sadly not all books and blogs are biblically accurate, but there are some incredible resources out there. Christian Authors have encouraged me and have challenged me so much in my christian walk. I have had books shed light on so many areas of my christian walk that I am a better woman for it!
Journaling- Writing my prayers down is what got me to a place to where I felt confident about praying. When I first started I would write down all of the prayer and then say it out loud to God. Now I write brief bullet points more so to help with consistency and retention in prayer. Journaling has also been a wonderful way to look back on my prayers, and see what God is doing and has done in my life!
